National Fitness Day: A Legacy That Started with Energie Fitness

Every year, National Fitness Day brings people across the UK together to celebrate something that sits at the heart of what we do: being active and enjoying the benefits of movement.
From gyms and leisure centres to schools, work places and communities, thousands of people come together to try something new, move more and celebrate the positive impact that physical activity can have on our lives.
But while National Fitness Day is now a nationwide celebration, its story began with a much smaller idea.
An idea born at Energie Fitness, led by our late founder, Jan Spaticchia. And it's a part of our history that we're incredibly proud to celebrate.
Where it all began
Jan Spaticchia was a pioneer of the fitness industry and the founder of Energie Fitness.
From the very beginning, Jan had a clear vision ‘Fitness should be accessible to everyone’.
He wanted to break down the barriers that could make fitness feel intimidating or exclusive and create opportunities for more people to discover the physical, social and mental benefits of being active.
That vision helped shape Energie Fitness and it also inspired something that would go on to become one of the biggest celebrations of fitness and physical activity in the UK.
In 2011, Jan played a leading role in launching National Fitness Day through the Energie Group.
The idea was simple. Create a day dedicated to encouraging people to get active, discover something they enjoy and recognise that fitness really is for everyone. It was about showing people that there is a form of physical activity for everyone, whatever their age, ability or experience.
From an Energie idea to a movement for everyone
What makes the story of National Fitness Day particularly special to us is what happened next.
Jan and the Energie team could have kept National Fitness Day as an Energie initiative.
Instead, they saw something bigger.
They recognised that if National Fitness Day was going to make a genuine difference, it needed to reach beyond one brand and become something that the whole fitness and physical activity industry could get behind.
So, in 2014, Energie Fitness gifted National Fitness Day to ukActive.
The decision allowed National Fitness Day to grow through ukActive's network, bringing together fitness operators, suppliers and organisations across the sector.
What had started as an idea within Energie Fitness became a celebration for the entire industry, and that was exactly the point. Jan didn't create National Fitness Day for Energie Fitness. He created it for everyone.
Why National Fitness Day matters
More than a decade on, National Fitness Day has become a powerful reminder of why movement matters.
Physical activity can help support our physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence and quality of life. But just as importantly, being active can bring people together.
A gym class can become a community, a walk can become time spent with a friend, trying something new can become the beginning of a completely new routine, and sometimes, simply taking that first step can make all the difference.
That's why National Fitness Day continues to matter.
It gives people a reason to pause, get moving and think about how they can make activity part of their everyday lives, whether that's through a gym workout, a group class, a run, a walk, a sport or simply finding a way to move that makes them feel good.
For us, National Fitness Day is more than just another date in the fitness calendar.
This National Fitness Day, we celebrate movement. We celebrate community. We celebrate fitness for everyone.
Happy National Fitness Day from everyone at Energie Fitness.
